Members Meeting – Guest Speaker Sharon Kennedy

October 15 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Following a brief business meeting, author Sharon Kennedy will speak on the Buffalo Soldiers.

WHY DID THOSE BUFFALO SOLDIERS BUILD THAT STONE MONUMENT HONORING SLAIN PRESIDENT JAMES A. GARFIELD?

In the fall of 1885, two troops of the Tenth Cavalry, an all-Black regiment, arrived in Bonita Canyon in the Chiricahua Mountains to defend use of the waterhole there by Geronimo and his people, should they return from the mountains in Mexico. During that time, they built a ten-foot monument to deceased President James A. Garfield. This is that story.

Sharon Kennedy is an independent researcher, author, and freelance writer. She writes popular history books about Black history and pioneer women. She lives in Sahuarita but considers Detroit her home.
